In Taiwan, you can see people burn "incense sticks" to worship the gods in temples. People have used such a way of worship for years. Of course, the "incense sticks" and "worship" have a close relationship.

"Incense sticks" was first used by the Buddhists. According to legend, the Buddha preached in hot days, so many believers wanted to sleep. Later, they found the good-smelling wood. They cut it into strips and burnt them with fire. The strong smell boosted people's spirits. Later, "incense sticks" were used to worship gods.

For me, "incense sticks" have some symbolic meanings. "Using incense to worship God" has become a tradition in Taiwan. "Incense sticks" can be used to achieve the following objectives:
(1) To convey the message of the people, and to communicate with gods
(2) To pray for peace and harmony
(3) To show respect for ancestors

Today, to protect our environment, Taiwanese government advises people to reduce the use of "incense sticks". Some temple owners have forbidden believers to use "incense sticks". They think a sincere heart is more imporant than an "incense stick".
